FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DAY ACTIVITIES

Family 1LEARNING
ACADEMICS
 

  • Read a book or tell a family story
  • Sign up for the NECSD Parent Portal 
  • Cook or bake together (science, math, reading)
  • Ask your child about their favorite book or school subject and why they like it
  • Create two goals about school. It can be grades, attendance, or homework
  • Talk with your child about why school is important
  • Speak to your child’s teacher about resources and ways to help your child

  • Ask your child about what things made them happy and what things were challenging today. Be a good listener…
  • Teach your child wellness skills (breathing, walking, talking)
  • Create daily routines for your child and be consistent
  • Kindness is caring. Do something kind to help others (donate to a food bank or smile and say hello to people you see)
  • Dance together to a favorite song

  • Work on a puzzle, play a game, draw or watch a movie together

  • Watch the news and talk about a current event

  • If the weather is nice take a walk together 
  • Talk with your child about the qualities of a good friend
  • Teach your child breathing exercises to help calm them down or get refocused. (Look at the video below on Box Breathing)

  • Have a talk with your child about the kindness of respecting differences.

  • Talk about what you child wants to be in the future (jobs, dreams, family)
  • Talk to your child about tough topics (drugs, bullying, peer pressure)
  • Attend the CRASE Event at Temple MS on November 18th from 11am-1pm and learn how to keep you and your family safe in the community.

  • Be an example and show that school is a priority by attending parent-teacher conferences and discussing the conference with your teen
  • Check the school website for activities and opportunities for clubs and interests (arts, sports, debate, enrichment)
  • Speak with your teen’s guidance counselor to discuss preparation for SATs/ACTs
  • Review certain school policies (attendance) with your child or discuss the Code of Conduct to reinforce expected behaviors

  • Teach your child wellness skills (breathing, walking, talking)
  • Routines are not just for younger children, but teens too. Talk to your teen about their sleep habits
  • Introduce your teen to writing in a journal about their feelings and challenges
  • Ask your child about an accomplishment that they achieved during the week. Celebrate achievements big and small
  • Contact social workers or psychologist at your child’s school if you need more help supporting your teen

  • Do yoga, take a walk, or make a dance video to watch a movie together
  • Plan a college tour or talk about career pathways

  • Talk to your teen about screen time and media multitasking (using more than one medium at a time: phone, television, computer.
